How we score aircon contractors in Singapore

What this page covers

SG Aircon Guide scores 600 air conditioning contractor businesses across Singapore on a 0-100 scale. This page explains exactly what goes into that number, why we weight the signals the way we do, and where the score falls short. The goal is simple: when you're picking someone to service, repair, or install your aircon system, you should be able to see the reasoning behind a ranking rather than just trust a badge.

The five signals and their weights

Every score is built from five measured signals, taken from public data. We list them here from heaviest to lightest weight.

  • Sentiment (28%): a synthesis of what recent reviews actually describe, praise as well as complaints, looking for patterns rather than a single good or bad comment.
  • Rating (26%): the business's aggregate Google star rating.
  • Volume (20%): how many reviews the business has, log-scaled so that a business with 400 reviews doesn't automatically dwarf one with 40, but a handful of reviews still can't compete with hundreds.
  • Recency (13%): how recently customers have actually left reviews, since a contractor's crew, pricing, and reliability can shift over a couple of years.
  • Completeness (13%): whether the listing has a phone number, website, opening hours, and address on record, basic signs that the business is easy to actually reach and verify.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

A star average can hide exactly the thing you need to know. Two aircon contractors can both sit at 4.3 stars, but one has a string of recent reviews mentioning the same gas top-up leak or a technician who never showed up for the follow-up visit, while the other's reviews are consistently about punctual servicing and clear quotes. The number alone won't tell you that. Reading what people actually wrote, and looking for repeated themes rather than one-off gripes, is the only way to catch a pattern before it becomes your problem. That's why sentiment is weighted above the raw star rating in our rubric, and why we treat it as a synthesis rather than a single data point.

Why the other signals matter

Rating still matters because it's the broadest snapshot of how customers feel, aggregated over time. Volume matters because a rating built on 5 reviews is far less reliable than one built on 200, though we log-scale it so an established contractor isn't unfairly rewarded just for being old. Recency matters because aircon servicing is a repeat relationship, and a contractor that was great in 2019 may have changed hands, staff, or pricing since. Completeness matters in a practical way: a business that lists its phone, hours, address and website is easier to verify and contact, and that basic transparency is worth something when you're inviting someone into your home.

Where the score is honest about its limits

Businesses with few recent reviews get a low-confidence score, and we label them as such on their listing. A score built on thin or stale data is still shown, but flagged, rather than hidden or dressed up to look as certain as one built on hundreds of recent reviews. We also don't republish reviews verbatim: we synthesise what they say and link back to Google so you can read the originals yourself and judge for us.

Scores are earned, not sold

Every score on this site comes from the rubric above and public data only. It is never edited by hand to move a business up or down. Where paid placement exists on the site, it is always labelled clearly and does not change the underlying score. If any list on this site has picks or ordering that involved editorial review rather than the scoring formula alone, that is disclosed on the page itself. You can see this approach in practice on our best aircon installation contractors list.

Who's behind this

SG Aircon Guide is published by SG Heartland Guides, which has run independent home services directories across Singapore since 2026, starting with air conditioning contractors. Rankings are never sold, sponsored placements are always labelled, and payment never changes a business's score. Editorial oversight of the rankings sits with Jacky Lee, Editor. The team re-checks listing data on a monthly cycle, and you'll see a "last verified" stamp on each listing showing when it was last reviewed, so you can tell the data is actively maintained rather than published once and left alone.

FAQ

Can a business pay to improve its score?
No. Scores come only from the rubric described on this page: sentiment, rating, volume, recency and completeness. Paid placements exist in some places on the site but are always labelled, and payment never changes a business's score.
Why do some listings show a low-confidence label?
If a business has few recent reviews, the data behind its score is thinner and less reliable, so we label it low-confidence rather than presenting it with the same certainty as a listing backed by hundreds of recent reviews.
Do you show the actual review text?
We don't republish reviews. We synthesise recurring themes from recent reviews and link back to the source on Google so you can read the originals and form your own view.
How often is the data updated?
Listing data is re-checked on a monthly cycle. Each listing carries a last verified stamp so you can see when it was last reviewed.
